Tillis Wins, Sending Democrats Clear Message About November

If North Carolina Republicans needed a theme song, I’d opt for, “Won’t Be Fooled Again” by The Who. Last night, Tar Heel State voters chose the most electable, most rational conservative to run against Kay Hagan this November. Thom Tillis is going to take the fight to Kay Hagan:

WASHINGTON — Thom Tillis won the GOP Senate nomination in North Carolina on Tuesday, delivering a big win to establishment Republicans over Tea Party insurgents.

Tillis, speaker of the North Carolina House, easily got over the 40% threshold needed to avoid a runoff in the closely watched Senate primary. His nomination sets up a fall matchup against Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan, in one of the races that could decide which party controls the Senate.

Republicans need a net gain of six Senate seats to oust Democrats from power.

“I want to go to Washington and clean up Kay Hagan’s mess,” Tillis told his enthusiastic supporters in Charlotte.

For note, I fundamentally reject the establishment vs. Tea Party narrative built in this race. Tillis’s main opponent, Greg Brannon, had a history of bizarre positions and statements which disqualified him in the race. This was about picking the best candidate to oust Hagan and win the North Carolina Senate seat. The results show that North Carolina voters weren’t going to fall into the trap of picking a potential Todd Akin, or Christine O’Donnell.

Rand Paul made the right decision by quickly endorsing Tillis, who routed his various opponents last night. It’s time to shift gears and take the fight to Hagan. Republicans odds of winning North Carolina have just shifted significantly in our favor.
